Equine Photography Industry Research
Better conversations about the profession start with better information. The equine photography industry has changed dramatically, but reliable information about the people working within it, how they build their businesses, where they invest, and how the profession itself is evolving remains difficult to find.
The Horse In Focus Industry Research initiative was created to begin changing that.
Through independent surveys and original research, THIF is building a clearer picture of the business, technology, purchasing behavior, professional practices, and emerging trends shaping equine photography.
Building a Better Picture of the Profession
There is no shortage of advice about equine photography. There is considerably less actual data.
We talk about what photographers charge, what equipment they use, whether print sales are declining, how much they invest in their businesses, the growth of private-client photography, the influence of social media, the adoption of video and AI, and the challenges facing working photographers. Much of that conversation, however, is based on individual experience and observation.
Those experiences matter. But they are not the same thing as industry data.
THIF Industry Research is intended to complement those conversations by gathering information directly from photographers across disciplines, experience levels, business models, and geographic regions. The goal is not to tell photographers how they should work. It is to better understand how they actually do.

What We're Studying
This can be a clean set of four or five columns/cards rather than another wall of copy:
The Profession
Who is photographing horses, where they work, their experience, specialties, and disciplines.
Business
Business models, revenue patterns, services, products, and changes in professional photography businesses.
Investment
Equipment, software, education, printing, products, travel, and purchasing intentions.
Technology
Camera systems, video, workflow technology, artificial intelligence, and changing tools.
The Future
The challenges photographers face today and what they believe will shape equine photography in the years ahead.
Research Principles
THIF Industry Research is designed to provide useful information while recognizing the limitations inherent in voluntary industry surveys. Participants are self-selected, and survey findings should not be interpreted as a statistical census of all equine photographers.
Individual survey responses are kept anonymous and findings are reported in aggregate. THIF does not sell or provide individual survey responses to advertisers, manufacturers, organizations, or other third parties.
Published research will distinguish between respondent groups when appropriate and will identify sample sizes and methodology so readers can understand the context behind the findings.
As the research program develops, maintaining consistent questions across survey years will also allow THIF to begin identifying changes and trends within the profession over time.

2026 State of Equine Photography
Inaugural Report — Coming 2026
Results from the 2026 Equine Photography Industry Survey will be analyzed and published in the inaugural State of Equine Photography report.
Help Us Document the Profession
The value of industry research depends on participation. If you photograph horses—professionally, part-time, as an emerging professional, or as a serious enthusiast—your experience is part of the picture.
